PERFORMERS BIOGRAPHIES: Matthijs Broersma (‘cello) Matthijs Broersma was born in Holland in 1987 and began playing the cello at the age of four. In 2000 he was awarded a bursary for Excellent Young Musicians by the Dutch Government to assist with the cost of specialist tuition and in 2001 he gained a place at The Yehudi Menuhin School where he studied with Leonid Gorokhov and Louise Hopkins. He has participated in masterclasses at IMS Prussia Cove and elsewhere with Colin Carr, Bernard Greenhouse, Frans Helmerson, Steven Isserlis and Arto Noras and has taken part in festivals such as the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades, the Menuhin Festival in Switzerland, the Paxos International Music Festival and The International Holland Music Sessions. As a soloist and chamber musician he has performed extensively throughout Europe, performing in venues such as the Concertgebouw and the Wigmore Hall. Recently he has given solo recitals at the Royal Festival Hall, Purcell Room and the Menuhin Hall, performed concertos with the New English Concert Orchestra and the Cambridge Beethoven Ensemble and Schubert’s String Quartet "Death and the Maiden" at the Barbican Hall. He is currently studying with Louise Hopkins at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. Ilyoung Chae (violin) Ilyoung Chae, born in 1987 in South Korea, began playing the violin at eight. In 1999 she attended the Cadenza music course in England where she met Natasha Boyarsky, and in that same year she moved to England and joined the Royal College of Music Junior Department in 2000. She joined The Yehudi Menuhin School in 2001 studying with Natasha Boyarsky and Rosemary Warren-Green. She has received the Geoffrey Shaw scholarship, Music Education Award from MBF, Martin Musical Scholarship Fund, an award from the Craxton Memorial Trust and Gwyn Ellis Bursary, Ethel Schwartz Award, and the Bratza Memorial Award from Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has played as a chamber musician and soloist in various venues including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, Mansion House, Barbican Art Centre, Royal Albert Hall, Regents Hall, St James's Church in London and the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad. Ilyoung has participated in masterclasses with Zakhar Bron, the Takács and Belcea Quartets, Dong Suk Kang, Tasmin Little, Pierre Amoyal, Dora Schwarzberg and Maxim Vengerov, and performed in last year’s Paxos Internationa Music Festival. She is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with David Takeno. Lara Dodds-Eden (piano) Australian pianist Lara Dodds-Eden recently completed a Fellowship in Piano Accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, studying with Caroline Palmer. Over the course of her career in London Lara has appeared in recital at Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, the Purcell Room, the Royal Opera House Crush Room, St. John’s Smith Square, the Barbican, St. James’ Piccadilly and LSO St Lukes, and featured in the Barbican Mostly Mozart Festival, the City of London Festival, Chelsea Schubert Festival and the Oxford Lieder Festival. She performed at the Paxos International Festival last summer, and has programmed the performances for this year. Lara now works as a freelance collaborative pianist, song accompanist and teacher. Arisa Fujita (violin) Born in Japan, Arisa studied with David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she is now a Professor. As a soloist and a member, with her sisters, of the Fujita Piano Trio, she has played in many parts of the world including at more than 100 venues in the UK alone, including the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and the Barbican. She has also been regularly invited to the Open Chamber Music Seminar of IMS Prussia Cove for many years and has taken part in their national tour, part of which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Following the release of a critically acclaimed CD of Toru Takemitsu’s music on the ASV Label, Arisa has also recorded the Ysaÿe Six Solo Sonatas, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich/Ravel, Schubert and Dvorak "Dumky"/Smetana Piano Trios, all with Intim Musik Label. Recently, she performed with Steven Isserlis at the Wigmore Hall and in Japan, toured Sweden with Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto with Kyoto Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan. Future engagements include concerts throughout the UK and in Sweden. Rhona McKail (soprano)
Rhona McKail, from Prestwick in Ayrshire, studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama where she gained a BA (Musical Studies) with first class honours in 2005. She recently concluded her studies on the opera course of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London, from where she gained both a Masters of Music with distinction and a Master of Music in Performance (Guildhall Artist), also with distinction. She sang many roles at GSMD, and upon leaving Anne Trulove in British Youth Opera’s acclaimed production of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. She has performed in many of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including: Wigmore Hall; St Martin in the Fields; Cadogan Hall; Barbican Hall; and the Birmingham Symphony Hall. Her concert highlights include major Handel, Purcell and Haydn works. Rhona won many accolades at the RSAMD and, since moving to London, won the Miriam Lycette Scholarship of 2006 and in 2007 the Simon Fletcher Charitable Trust Scholarship, was awarded a Susan Chilcott Scholarship and was the winner of the National English Song Competition. Most recently she was a semi-finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Competition and won second prize in the London Handel Festival’s competition. Tetsuumi Nagata (viola) Tetsuumi was born in Canada in 1988 and began his study of the violin when he was five with Marlin Wolfe. He made his debut as a soloist in March 1999, playing Vivaldi: The Four Seasons with the Vancouver Island Symphony who he has since performed with numerous times. In September 2000, he began his studies at The Yehudi Menuhin School in the UK, where he studied with Hu Kun and Maciej Rakowski and also learned to play the viola. Tetsuumi is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London with David Takeno and is a recipient of a Martin Musical Scholarship Award. In the UK, Tetsuumi has performed with the Guildford Symphony Orchestra and the Polesden Lacey Festival Orchestra. He has also given concerts at the Wigmore Hall, Barbican Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Albert Hall, The Menuhin Hall, The Sage Gateshead, Fairfield Halls, St John’s Smith Square and St James' Piccadilly. He has participated in numerous festivals such as the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad, Switzerland, Genius of the Violin Festival in London, RNCM Schumann/Brahms Fest in Manchester, Northern Chords Festival in Newcastle, Chacombe Festival, Soundwaves Festival in Brighton, Gower and Wyastone Festivals in Wales, and the Paxos International Music Festival. Tetsuumi has performed with artists such as the late Mstislav Rostropovich, Alexander Rudin, Andras Schiff, Jeremy Menuhin, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Gordan Nikolitch, Arisa Fujita, Krzysztof Smietana and Caroline Palmer and has taken part in masterclasses with Paul Katz, Zvi Zeitlin, Dora Schwarzberg, Sir Colin Davis, David Alberman, Sebastian Hamann and members of the Alban Berg, Belcea, Bochmann, Chilingirian, Endellion, Takacs and Wihan String Quartets.
