Manolis Vlachopoulos was an amateur photographer of everyday life on Paxos from the 50's to the late 70's. Worked as a butcher at the Gaios supermarket for many years. Died recently after months of suffering. Very much loved and respected by everyone. Daniela Sambo, an amateur photographer herself and a good friend of his, took a large selection of his black and white photos to Brussels, turned them into digital and organized an exhibition in the old Customs House with the help of Marouso Grammatikou and Faye Lychnou and the support of Poseidon Cultural Association. During the opening hundreds of people came to see glimpses of the life of Paxiots of the past in all its simplicity, warmth and beauty. Spyros Anemogiannis (taxidi bar) with Elias Dendias, Ourania Mitsiali and Ioanna Vlachopoulou performed traditional local songs bringing tears in the eyes of many people present. The mayor, the president of the Paxiots' Association of Athens were present along with a prominent Paxiot, Anastasis Mitsialis, (Greece's ambassador in the United Nations in New York). Proceeds from Manolis's photos went to his daughter, Vivi.
The exhibition had enormous success. Many people failed to visit it, so we had to promise to do another one next summer with a new bunch of his wonderful photos.
