By Archduke Ludwig Salvator, eminent scientist and accomplished artist of the 19th century.
Translation by Margarita Luzzatto
Much more than just a sociological, historical and economic analysis of everyday life on the islandsΆ complex of Paxos in the1880Άs; a full record of all his walks, conversations, observations; all his detailed sketches and full page drawings of landscapes and buildings still standing today for the visitor to see, creating a unique snapshot of the emerald islands of the Ionian Sea.
Between 1884 and 1885 Archduke Ludwig Salvator, an eminent scientist, visited and lived amongst the people of Paxos and Antipaxos for 18 months.
Before he arrived he sent a questionnaire, the “Tabulae Ludovicianae”, devised by him, to everyone of any importance asking for information about the island. This book is the result - a unique snapshot of Paxos and Antipaxos in the 1880Άs.
But it is much more than just a sociological and economic analysis. He recorded all the walks he made and conversations he had with the people he met. He was also an accomplished artist and the book is copiously illustrated with his detailed sketches and full page drawings.
The book was edited by Geoffrey and Hilary Herdman. It is currently being published in England and will be in the bookstores by the end of January 2011. It will be also sold on Paxos.
