The Olive oil Association of Corfu since 2005 has started realizing a project called: “Actions for the preservation of traditional olive groves” in order to influence public opinion towards a mild (not excessive) olive trees cultivation and the preservation of the traditional character of olive groves. Three such olive groves were chosen: one in Paxos, one in Apokorona village near Chania (Crete) and in Pelion. Paxos was originally chosen because its olive groves date from the Venetian conquerors of the Middle Ages on Paxos, they are of great natural beauty, they engulf within them many sites and monuments, flora among the olive trees is on many occasions unique, contributing in the entering of Paxos and Antipaxos in the NATURA 2000 international network. In addition to all the above, Paxos society is small and tightly connected, an element which makes educating and informing people a lot easier. A municipal olive grove called “Soumaki” at the area of Ieromonahos, north of Gaios was chosen to be turned into a model of traditional olive grove according to the Olive oil AssociationΆs project. This olive grove was donated to the Community by the original owner, pharmacist, Panagiotis Kagas, member of the Greek Parliament in the 1930s. The following works were done in the Soumaki olive grove: • Reconstruction and preservation of ground levels. • Clearing of footpaths passing from the olive grove • Clearing under the olive trees • Trimming of the olive trees branches • Reconstruction of dry stone walls within and around the olive grove • Renovation of the small building within the olive grove to be used as and exhibition area All the above interventions were planned and executed by a team of workers and agriculturalists from the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Corfu with the collaboration of the Municipal Authorities of Paxos. The Soumaki olive grove will be open to the public (tourists and olive oil producers) this summer season in the hope it will be an excellent example of an alternative way of olive tree cultivation.
