An Athens chartographic firm, called “Anavasi”, came to Paxos to create the first walking map of the island in Greek. Penelopy Matsouka, owner of the firm, came to Paxos on the 8th of December 2008 with her associate Nikos Michalopoulos and walked our island with the guidance and useful suggestions of Giana Hromkova, who – after thoroughly exploring Paxos and Antipaxos footpaths for the last 4 years – has become an expert on sightseeing and local flora and fauna. P. Matsouka, after walking on Paxos paths for about 4 days, stated: “I have never seen more beautiful olive groves anywhere in Greece. I have never seen so many settlements and small villages, so well organized, with unique location names scattered everywhere in your olive groves. This characteristic makes Paxos a classical case of improved natural environment by human intervention. One can see all around the hard work locals have done on the island for centuries. However, nowadays Paxiots should be aware of the many dangers of those interventions. Excess human activity has become gradually damaging to your island’s ecosystem and rhythm of deterioration is rapidly increasing”. The map will be printed on a scale of 1:20.000. It will have two sides. On the second side it proposes 10 routes among the total number of paths shown on the map, with short information about the sites found during those 10 proposed walks in Greek and English. The map’s keys will be in four languages (Greek, English, German, French). “Anavasis” hopes to be able to circulate the map of Paxos to bookshops all over the world through its excellent connections with international publishers adding Paxos to the world network of walking places worth visiting. Its printing will start within March 2009 and it will be improved and reprinted annually.
