Ergon Ensemble of the Paxos Spring Festival
At the Athens Megaron!

A bit of the Paxos spirit filled “D. Mitropoulos” hall of the Athens Megaron on the 24rth of January 2009, when the Ergon Ensemble, the new music ensemble created from the June 2008 Paxos Spring Festival presented an almost full house a tribute to 20th century French music under the guidance of conductor Casper de Roo. The prominent young Greek soloists of the Ergon Ensemble performed with great self confidence works of: Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992), Pierre Boulez (1925), Tristan Murail (1947) and Regis Campo (1968). «Pop - Art 2002».
The particular concert was the first one in a series of 3 Megaron concerts before the 2009 Paxos Spring Festival takes place between the 23rd of June to the 5th of July 2009 in the old Loggos and Lakka schoolhouses. Theme of this year’s Spring Festival will be: “New Music in Greece”.
On the 14nth of March 2009 the Ergon Ensemble will present a tribute to Spanish music of the 20th century. The following pieces will be performed:
• Cristobal Halffter (1930) Oda para felicitar a un amigo (1969)
• Manuel Hidalgo (1956) Quintett (1990)
• Elena Mendoza – Lopez: Nebelsplitter (2008)
• Jose – Maria Sanchez – Verdu (1968): Qasid 3 for clarinet, viola and piano (2001).
• Agustin Charles Soler (1960): Unstable surface (2006)
On the 5th of May 2009 the Athens audience will enjoy a tribute to contemporary German music with the following programme:
• Manfred Stahnke (1951): Frankfurt Musicbox (2003)
• Helmut Lachenmann (1935): Pression (1970)
• Arnold Schonberg (1874-1951): Drei Klavierstucke op. 11 (1909)
• Anton Webern (1883-1945): Vier Stucke op. 7 (1922)
• Gyorgy Ligeti (1923-2006): Streichquartett n. 1 (1953-1954)
Responsible for organizing the 2009 Spring Festival and the Megaron concerts are: Paxos Festival Trust, Athens Megaron, Costopoulos Foundation and “Poseidon” Cultural Association of the Municipality of Paxos.
