Rescue of 28 immigrants

On the morning of the 26th January, a large inflatable boat ran aground on the rocky islet of Daskalia, just south of Antipaxos. On board were two Italian smugglers and 28 immigrants, probably of Syrian origin. Due to the difficult weather conditions Air Force helicopters were called in to airlift the refugees to safety. The Paxos Health Centre provided first aid where necessary and blankets, clothing and food were offered by the Paxos Municipality and residents of the island.
The immigrants were sent to Corfu by ferryboat on the afternoon of the same day.
